Spookats, howlers, and puppies oh my! Devlog #2
Day 2 in this mission and already there are problems.
When adapting the source material, I recognize that not everything can be replicated 1 to 1. We are not machines. Though the man at the head of the table may rule the world he does not compute each change in milliseconds. Things like tracking howler bullets for example. How fast do they move? Should the Gm really be responsible for tracking every single bullet?
No. So to implement these enemies I have devised a clever system. The monsters will tell the players what they are going to do at the start of each round. ex.
The howler will face (x) direction and fire.
Gremlin A will move close to (x) knight and attempt to attack.
Then when it reaches that units turn they will execute the action. This immediately sets a target priority for the knights. Any unit that moves faster than they can, must be slain first. For anything that spawns bullets the projectile acts as a ray of light hitting only the first knight in it's path.
"But that's like forcing the player to take damage."
Maybe. . . . If they didn't have a get out of jail free card. Essentially that is what the dash mechanic is. Dashes will now be a skill. When and how many times you can use it is still under construction. Right now it will be an extra action taken on any turn with use once per battle/room. maybe Twice on bosses, or under a 2-3 round cooldown. Infinite dashes would be absolutely broken along with shields. ultimately concessions must be made all around. I like particularly having only 1 per battle because it's easier to track for the gm who is one person and will be managing 4 knights and the entirety of the clockworks.
Or if you play solo then it is just more tedious tracking added onto you. Not only do I want this to be good. I want this to be an inherently fast system. that's why there are no "accuracy rolls" The dmg roll itself tells you how accurate you were. DId the shot hit dead center? Did it hit the head? A vital point? Was it just a grazing blow? Was it completely off/negated by armor? the amount of damage done will tell the players what happened. Accuracy rolls only serve to slow down a system and be a 2nd/ or 3rd chance to completely miss. NO. We are all competent knights here.
I'll leave it there for now. as an aside I've started typing it out. I might just make the text brutally no nonsense just so I don't have to type that much.
